About Therapy

I will offer you a confidential space where you can bring your struggles, thoughts, behaviours and feelings. I will work at your pace with what you chose to share. I will offer you my observations, interpretations and curiosity about what you share so that together we can increase your understanding and self-awareness. To truly know an issue, to discover its root and its reason can make it possible to then make desired changes. Increasing self awareness can be initially unsettling. A very simplistic analogy would be to liken embarking on therapy to deciding to tidy a room that you can no longer feel comfortable in. Sometimes, when you start taking everything off the shelves the room can look in a worse mess than when you started and you may wonder why you decided to embark on the task. However, once you begin to select what you wish to remain, you throw out what you no longer want to keep and you place things where you want them to be, you achieve a room that is comfortable for you to live in. The effort then feels really worthwhile. I will be alongside you, working with you and supporting you as we explore what you choose to bring.

Some people are reluctant to give themselves the opportunity for therapy, perhaps thinking that they should just get on with things themselves or because they think seeking help is a sign of weakness. I wonder if they would be as reluctant to call the doctor if they were seriously injured? Not all hurts are visible or physical. Emotional hurts can be hugely painful and very impacting on your life. I believe they too need to be healed. To me seeking the help you need, when you need it, is a real sign of personal strength. It can help you all to discover the life you want and to live the life you want to live.

Who I can Work With

I can offer a range of therapeutic interventions.

Individual Therapy - The focus of the work is fully on you and the issues you choose to bring. Learning about your self can be a deeply personal and moving experience. You will gain insight to your life, relationships and behaviours. Engaging in therapy as an individual, can hopefully enable you to reach an honesty that is uncompromised by any concern of what others may think. Find Out More.

Couples Counselling - If a relationship is causing pain and hurt then it can be worked on and helped by therapy. When two people enter therapy together, the relationship can be openly explored and challenged. It is an opportunity for each party to increase their self awareness and, indeed, gain a deeper understanding of the other. If communication within your relationship has become difficult, counselling support can help to restore this in a way that allows all parties to be truly heard by the other. Decisions about how to move forward can be thoroughly and openly talked through in a neutral and impartial space. It would, of course, be important that both parties are committed to engaging in the therapy. Find Out More.

Family/Group Therapy - The dynamics of family or group relationships can be very complex. However, as with any close or important relationship, when there is serious disharmony it can impact negatively on each individual and their ability to cope in life in the way that they would wish. Sometimes communication has become so difficult for so long that a sense of hopelessness or despair about the relationship develops. Family/Group therapy can enable each member to communicate what they need. Feelings and emotions can be seen and responded to by all parties. The behaviour of individuals can be explored and the impact of that behaviour on others can be acknowledged and shared. Therapy gives you the time and space needed to work on this relationship, away from the day to day distractions. It is a unique opportunity to all work together with the hope of repair. Child Therapy - Very young children would find it very difficult to only use talk as a means of exploring and communicating their innermost thoughts and feelings. Children often benefit from more creative approaches, such as play therapy and art therapy. Actions, behaviours or imaginative role play acted out in the playroom are often wonderful unconscious openings to issues that a child may be burdened by. The process is gentle and child led. My role is to know when a child has given the opening for exploration and to utilise the opportunity to its fullest. Children have all the complexities that adults have. They too need to trust their therapist and feel safe in the therapeutic process. I believe that I can build that relationship with the child and I am passionate about the work, as an early intervention can free that young person to go on and live the life they want to live. Young Adults/Adolescents - I am a member of CCYP (Counselling Children and Young People) because I am very interested in offering help to this vulnerable group. The transition from a child to a young adult can be fraught with confusion. Issues of sexuality, self-esteem, behaviour and relationships are common. A young adult must sense that you care before they will engage fully in therapy, and I do. Find Out More.
